ABOUT JOHN BARRETT III

John Barrett III has dedicated his career to public service, community leadership, and improving the quality of life for the people he has represented. A lifelong resident of the Berkshires, he began his career in education as an elementary school teacher. It was during this period that his commitment to public service took shape, rooted in hard work, accessibility, compassion, and a deep dedication to helping people.

John later went on to serve as Mayor of North Adams, becoming the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history and one of the longest-serving mayors in Massachusetts. During one of the most challenging economic periods the region had ever faced following the closure of Sprague Electric, Barrett provided steady leadership and a clear vision for the future. Rather than allowing the city to decline, he focused on rebuilding the local economy, strengthening neighborhoods, supporting education, and creating new opportunities for families and businesses.

One of his most significant accomplishments was the leadership role he played in the development of MASS MoCA. What was once an abandoned industrial complex has become one of the most successful cultural and economic revitalization projects in the country. Today, MASS MoCA draws visitors from around the world, supports local businesses, creates jobs, and has helped redefine North Adams and the Berkshires as a destination for arts, tourism, and culture.

Throughout his career, John has built a reputation as one of the region’s most effective advocates for state funding and economic investment. Time and again, he has successfully secured millions of dollars for infrastructure improvements, economic development projects, schools, housing initiatives, tourism, public safety, and downtown revitalization efforts throughout the 1st Berkshire District. His experience, relationships, and knowledge of state government have consistently delivered meaningful results for the communities he represents.

John has also been a strong champion for outdoor recreation, environmental initiatives, and regional tourism. Through his persistence and leadership, he secured $9.5 million for the construction of the Greylock Glen Outdoor Center in Adams. The continued development of Greylock Glen has strengthened the region’s growing outdoor recreation economy while promoting environmental education and expanding tourism opportunities across Berkshire County.

He currently serves as State Representative for the 1st Berkshire District, representing 13 communities in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. On Beacon Hill, he has become a leading advocate for rural communities and healthcare access. John played a critical role in the reopening of North Adams Regional Hospital as a Critical Access Hospital, helping ensure that residents throughout Northern Berkshire continue to have access to essential healthcare services close to home. His leadership on healthcare issues has been instrumental not only for patient care, but also for the economic stability and future growth of the region.

Equally important to his public accomplishments is John's extraordinary commitment to constituent service. Known throughout the district for never turning people away, he has personally helped hundreds of residents navigate unemployment issues, healthcare challenges, housing concerns, veteran services, registry problems, and countless other matters involving state government. People know they can call John because he listens, follows through, and works tirelessly to get results.

Over the course of his career, John Barrett has earned a reputation as a practical, bipartisan leader who understands his communities, knows how government works, and delivers for the people he represents. His proven record of accomplishment, deep roots in the Berkshires, and unwavering commitment to public service has made him an effective voice on Beacon Hill for the people of the 1st Berkshire District.
